Fiction/ Fantasy/ Adult
💣Brief (spoiler alert)
Setting: the dystopian world of Scadrial, where ash constantly falls from the sky, all plants are brown, and supernatural mists cloak the landscape every night
Center of the Mistborn world: Magic (Allomancy). Allomancers gain supernatural abilities by swallowing and "burning" specific metals. It is a genetic trait concentrated in the nobility or skaa Allomancers (crossbreeding between nobility and peasantry). Normal Allomancers have access to 1 Allomantic power, but an incredibly rare subset of Allomancers, called Mistborn, have access to every Allomantic power.
Vin is a teenage street urchin who later discovers that she is a Mistborn and joins Kelsier's crew. Kelsier rounded up his old thieving crew for a new job: to overthrow the Final Empire by stealing its treasury and collapsing its economy. The trilogy tells the story of Vin and her companions on their goal to kill the Lord Ruler and build a new system of democratic government where people no longer suffer from hunger and poverty.
👀Thoughts
A masterpiece. One of the most recommended books for those who want to try fantasy. Highly rated on Goodreads with over 4.5 stars, the trilogy has over 2.1k pages but trust me, it totally paid off.
The first few pages seemed quite “daunting” since it was my first experience with fantasy, but I was fully immersed in the story afterward. It took me months to finish that book 😂, but I cannot put it down as long as I held it. I won’t mind reading it again if I have the chance.
What I liked about it
- The first book - The Final Empire - gives basic knowledge about most of the characters, as well as their personalities and actions.
- The second one - The Well of Ascension - shifts the focus from Kelsier to Vin and Elend.
- The third one - The Hero of Ages - was the most complete picture of politics, emotions, faiths, trust, war, and peace. Especially, the last 100 pages gave me goosebumps, held me breathlessly, and took me on an emotional ride while the rest of my family was trying to sleep😅
What I didn't like about it
💖Favorite quotes
- Let them see my weakness, and let them see me overcome it.
- Lately, I feel like my life is a book written in a language I don’t know how to read.
- Yes, I keep the flower,” Kelsier said. “I’m not really sure why. But…do you stop loving someone just because they betray you? I don’t think so. That’s what makes the betrayal hurt so much—pain, frustration, anger…and I still loved her. I still do.
